Today I want to tell you about the “BB Cream Journey” that I have been on since 2012 when BB creams became popular. And like many other darker skinned beauties can confirm….it was one tough ride!!!
So what is BB Cream exactly?
BB stands for Blemish Balm, Blemish Base or Beauty Balm. It was formulated in the 1960’s by a German dermatologist called Dr. Christine Schrammek, who used the cream after her patients had surgery or facial peels to protect their skin (so it could heal properly) and hide any scars and redness after the laser treatments.
Years later BB Cream became very popular in Asia, especially in South Korea, where national celebrities promoted the cream stating it would do wonders for the skin.
Interesting…But what does BB Cream do?
A good BB Cream should be a total package. It moisturizes, protects against the sun, soothes and primes skin and gives light to medium coverage. But in my experience some BB Creams could be a little more moisturizing, because they leave the skin looking flaky and dry.
I have a darker skin tone, which BB Cream do you recommend?
For YEARS women with a darker skin tone complained about there not being a BB Cream that matched their skin tone. I also was one of them and was so frustrated by the fact that there was no BB Cream that didn’t make me look like a mime. Through the years a couple of brands have added a darker cream to their collection but I still didn’t REALLY like any of them because I also have extremely dry skin and none of them were hydrating enough.
The BB cream I recently fell in love with is the one by Annika Maya Cosmetics in the shade “Medium/Deep”.It’s has a thicker texture than a tinted day cream but gives way more coverage.I don’t even have to put extra foundation on top of it. It gives me a medium coverage and evens out my skin color. As you can see in the picture below it gives me a smooth look (as if i have a light covering foundation on) but you can still see the freckles on my nose.
The Annika Maya BB creams are created to prime and nourish your face, strengthen your skin, even out your skin tone and protect your skin against damaging UV rays with Broad Spectrum SPF 30. It also contains age defying peptides and natural extracts to help promote regeneration of new cells and gives a youthful glow to the skin. Perfect for you beauties who are a little older (…ahum, that includes yours truly too, LoL)
Awesome! And where can I get this Annika Maya BB Cream?
Annika Maya is a cosmetics brand made and sold by Brigette’s Boutique. The BB Cream is sold in 3 shades: Light, Medium and Medium/Deep. I would recommend the Medium/Deep shade to women with skin tones that are “tan” and darker (see chart) but I’m not sure if it’s for the really dark skinned beauties among us (think: Alek Wek’s complexion).
Is Annika Maya affordable or will I have to empty my bank account to buy this awesome BB Cream?
Honestly, there are cheaper BB Creams on the market. Though, in my opinion this one is well worth the $19.50!!! Especially if you have dry skin like me, you’ll really like this product!!
Not only does the BB Cream have an introductory price of $9.95 … I also have a discount code code for you guys!!!
Just enter code “DEBORAH5” at checkout for an additional 5% off your order!!

With such a huge markdown (not $19.50 … but $9.95 with an additional 5% off!!!) it’s absolutely worth giving it a try! And not just the Medium/Deep one, but also the other shades for you beauties with a lighter skin tone!
